Em um dos eventos que realizamos recentemente para as empresas filiadas ao PICCIP, discutimos um cenário de mudanças na sociedade que podem impactar no comportamento futuro das pragas urbanas. Nessa projeção, baseada na análise de campos econômicos com maior potencial de crescimento no século XXI, o desenvolvimento do turismo se destacou entre as sete áreas com maior potencial de avanço.
Poucas semanas depois, a grande mídia e as redes sociais viralizaram centenas de vídeos e reportagens sobre grandes infestações de pragas em dois dos principais destinos turísticos do mundo: Paris e Nova Iorque, que se viram às voltas com a necessidade de enfrentamento urgente e em larga escala de duas diferentes pragas. A capital francesa está tendo que lidar com um inusitado aumento da infestação de percevejos de cama, uma praga que atinge principalmente a indústria hoteleira. E Manhattan, o principal distrito econômico e cultural de Nova Iorque, com o crescimento brusco e descontrolado da população de ratos, um problema crônico, já tão conhecido que é uma das “marcas registradas” da cidade que nunca dorme.
Essas infestações, muito além da sensação de desconforto e das preocupações com a saúde, provocam algumas reflexões importantes. Como algumas das cidades mais caras e com maior infraestrutura de serviços de turismo são infestadas por pragas em uma escala que pode interferir em uma indústria tão lucrativa, e qual o impacto desse fenômeno? Em Paris, há estudos que já mostram o receio de muitos turistas em comparecer às Olimpíadas de 2024, com medo de não encontrar acomodações livres do problema dos percevejos, ou pior, transportar essa praga de volta para suas casas nas bagagens. Em Nova Iorque, as pessoas começam a evitar caminhar e consumir em pontos muito movimentados e com alta concentração de restaurantes (e mais lixo e ratos), assim como começam a apresentar receio de se locomover pelo metrô da cidade, um equipamento urbano famoso pela desenvoltura com que os ratos se aproximam das pessoas sem nenhum receio. Outra questão está relacionada aos esforços e à quantidade de recursos necessários para o controle desses animais em um ambiente tão complexo como as metrópoles afetadas pelo problema. Além do dinheiro, tempo e pessoal, há também as questões técnicas para planejar e executar: já imaginaram quantos esconderijos e fontes de alimentos esses animais encontram em cidades tão grandes? Como identificar, monitorar e intervir em todos eles? Não será perigoso, para o meio ambiente e as pessoas, a utilização de toneladas de raticidas e inseticidas para matar essas pragas? O que fazer com a enorme quantidade de ratos capturados ou mortos durante as ações de controle? É quase um consenso que em grandes infestações por percevejos de cama é necessário o descarte de roupas de cama, tapetes, colchões e, às vezes, até da mobília onde esses insetos estão proliferando. Será possível essa medida em hotéis de alto luxo com mobiliário centenário e com alto valor histórico e cultural? Quantos hóspedes desses estabelecimentos irão recorrer à justiça, processando os hotéis por danos morais, econômicos e à sua saúde? Qual o dano que essas infestações podem causar à imagem e às marcas do sistema hoteleiro e da alimentação dessas cidades? A infestação de ratos em Nova Iorque, associada às recentes enchentes que a cidade sofreu, pode criar um ambiente propício para o surgimento de surtos de leptospirose ou outras doenças infecciosas que não são comuns nessa cidade? Os médicos e o sistema de saúde locais estão preparados para lidar com essas doenças? Isso tudo sem considerar o esforço para promover, na sociedade dessas cidades, a necessidade da mudança de rotinas, hábitos e costumes dos trabalhadores do setor de serviços e da população que são indispensáveis para o controle integrado desses insetos e roedores.
Como podemos ver nesse panorama geral, o problema das pragas e seu impacto sobre a atividade turística é uma questão muito séria e que tende a se tornar cada vez mais complexa. Afinal, viajar é uma das atividades que mais faz bem ao corpo e ao espírito, e isso faz com que cada vez mais pessoas procurem conhecer novos lugares, pessoas e culturas. E para que esse lucrativo segmento econômico seja sustentável a longo prazo, os locais de destino dessas viagens, como o Rio de Janeiro, devem aprender com as experiências de outras cidades e estruturar seu controle integrado de pragas urbanas voltado para o turismo de modo mais atento e profissional.
